Ghent - The World Soundtrack Academy has announced the list of its nominees for the 2011

On Saturday, October 22nd at 8:00p.m., Oscar winners Elliot Goldenthal, Howard Shore, and Hans Zimmer will be the distinguished guests at the closing ceremony of the 38th Ghent Film Festival at the Kuipke in Ghent. Following the annual presentation of the prestigious film music awards, the Brussels Philharmonic – the Orchestra of Flanders - will perform a singular selection from the three great masters’ extensive oeuvres conducted by Dirk Brossé. In keeping with tradition, the winner of last year’s World Soundtrack Discovery Award will take the stage during the awards ceremony. Abel Korzeniowski will perform his award-winning music from A Single Man, which also earned him the Public Choice Award in 2010. As always, the live music will be accompanied by striking film footage. The concert is being dedicated in memory of Ronni Chasen, longtime representative and friend of the film festival.


The World Soundtrack Academy was founded in 2001 by the Ghent International Film Festival to celebrate the role of music in film and honor film composers. The WSA Academy now has over 300 international members comprised of composers, film professionals, record label executives and other representatives of the film music business.


At the end of August, the Academy Board will announce the 5 nominees for the category ‘Discovery of the Year 2011’. In addition to the Awards presented by the Academy, film music fans around the world can vote for the best soundtrack of the year (see www.worldsoundtrackacademy.com).

World Soundtrack Lifetime Achievement Award for disco pioneer Giorgio Moroder

The 11th World Soundtrack Awards, which will be held at the Kuipke Events Centre in Ghent on 22 October,welcome a new star in their line-up: none other than three-time Oscar winner and “father of disco” Giorgio Moroder (Midnight Express, Flashdance, Scarface). During the awards ceremony, he will be conferred a Lifetime Achievement Award for his exceptional career in film music. A selection from his work will be performed live by the Brussels Philharmonic, conducted by Dirk Brossé.


Artistic Director Patrick Duynslaegher explains why Giorgio Moroder was chosen for this award: “The Ghent
Film Festival is very proud to welcome living legend Giorgio Moroder to the World Soundtrack Awards, where he will be presented with the World Soundtrack Lifetime Achievement Award. Giorgio Moroder instantly reminds us of Donna Summer’s many disco hits. Her orgiastic panting hit I FEEL LOVE is the ultimate symbol of the hedonistic fun of the 70s and 80s. More than 30 years ago, Moroder revolutionised electronic dance music, and to this day, he is anything but forgotten: as the creator of synth-pop disco, he continues to be a great example for many young dance producers and electro musicians. Internationally, he inspired major performers like Madonna and electro wizard Jeff Mills. In his home country his name is also synonymous with the new disco scene.


Naturally, the Ghent Film Festival wants to honour Giorgio Moroder primarily for his film music. He introduced his unusual, recognisable sound with his first score, for Alan Parker’s Midnight Express (1978), with thrilling beats loudly echoing throughout the film like a human heartbeat. After his score for Foxes (which included the Donna Summer hit ON THE RADIO), Moroder achieved cult status with two scores for Paul Schrader films: American Gigolo (1980), which included the Blondie song CALL ME, and Cat People (1982), for which David Bowie sang the title song, a performance sure to set your teeth on edge. Moroder achieved his greatest commercial success in 1983 with Flashdance (two no. 1 singles and a soundtrack that sold more than ten million copies). Another major success in the film music career of the inventor of euro disco is the baroque score for Brian De Palma’s masterpiece, the epic crime drama Scarface (1983).


And of course there is Moroder’s most audacious contribution to film music history: the new soundtrack he created in 1984 for Fritz Lang’s monumental classic Metropolis. Moroder brought the crushing images of this silent film from 1927 back to life with a rock-new wave soundtrack brimming with songs by pop stars Pat Benatar, Freddie Mercury and Bonnie Tyler. Moreover, he dipped every scene into a sensational coloured hue, added all sorts of visual effects and increased the speed of the image sequences of the original edit. Some purists cried blue murder, but Moroder’s electronic lifting transformed a piece destined to be forgotten on a museum display into a new film experience and a prophetic announcement of an entire new culture of zapping, mixing and sampling.”


The World Soundtrack Awards & concert will be held on Saturday 22 October 2011 at 8 p.m. at the Kuipke Events Centre in Ghent. The programme includes music by Moroder, Hans Zimmer (Inception), Howard Shore (The Lord of the Rings), Elliot Goldenthal (Alien 3) and Abel Korzeniowski (A Single Man). The concert will be performed by the Brussels Philharmonic, conducted by Dirk Brossé, and will, as always, be accompanied by film scenes projected on a large screen.

For many of those who realize their calling in life at an early age, the world is wide open with success and opportunity at every turn. When Spanish actress Elena Anaya felt that her talents gravitated toward a life on the stage and screen, the aspiring young actress spared precious little time in getting herself prepared for life in the limelight -- a fact that no doubt played a part in her being named one of European Films' Shooting Stars during the 2004 European Film Promotion campaign. A relatively new face to stateside audiences at the time of her international debut in 2004's Van_Helsing, Anaya was soon climbing the latter to international success with subsequent roles opposite such screen heavies as Gary_Oldman (Dead_Fish) and Viggo_Mortensen (Alatriste).

A native of Palencia, Spain, whose early childhood was spent practicing karate at the Okinawa Gymnasium and climbing mountains, Anaya opted out of Cadiz School in 1996 -- choosing instead to join the Real Escuela Superior de Arte Dramático de Madrid and study under actor Manuel_Morón. Following her feature debut in the 1996 drama África, Anaya continued to impress with supporting roles in such features as Black_Tears and Wiped-Out Footprints. A turn opposite handsome Spanish leading man Eduardo_Noriega in the 2000 romantic drama El Invierno de las Anajanas showed great promise for the burgeoning actress, with a role in the erotic arthouse drama Sex and Lucia earning her a Goya nomination for Best Supporting Actress. As her profile continued to increase thanks to roles in such features as The Blue Room and Pedro_Almadóvar's Talk to Her, it seemed only a matter of time before Anaya's popularity went international. Kristin Kreuk is a Canadian actress, born December 30 1982 in Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada. Her father is of Dutch ancestry and her mother is of Chinese ancestry. Her first role was in a Canadian television soap opera, Edgemont. She began an advertising campaign as a model for Neutrogena in 2002, and appeared in a made-for-TV movie adaptation of Snow White.

Biography

By December 2003 she was still in Edgemont, and also playing the part of Lana Lang in the television series Smallville.

Kristin was planning to study either psychology, environmental science, or forensic science at Simon Fraser University when a casting director for the CBC TV series Edgemont ringed up Eric Hamber  Secondary School, looking for an exotic-looking girl to play the part of a Chinese Canadian, Laurel Yeung on the Vancouver-shot show. Although she is not a Chinese Canadian in reality, she is considered an Eurasian. But many Eurasian or multiracial actors don't mind playing other races. Kreuk, who had no previous experience in acting other than musicals at her high school, was convinced to audition for the role by her drama teacher. Much to her surprise, she won the part.
After shooting the first season of Edgemont (a teen soap opera set at a Vancouver-area high school) and getting herself an agent, Kreuk landed the lead role of Snow White in a TV movie entitled Snow White: The Fairest of Them All. The film, shot in Vancouver, also starred actress Miranda Richardson. It aired on ABC on March 17, 2002.

After Snow White, Kristin Kreuk's agent sent an audition tape to movie screenwriters Alfred Gough and Miles Millar, who at the time were putting together the cast of a show they had created for the WB Network entitled Smallville. The program (which was slated to be shot in Vancouver) was to revolve around the life of teenager Clark Kent, alias Superboy. Gough and Millar called Kreuk to the WB's studios in Burbank, California to audition for the role of Clark Kent's pre-Lois Lane love, Lana Lang. Originally, Kreuk was not so sure about auditioning for the Lana role, as the character was to be a popular, gorgeous cheerleader and so she assumed that the part would be that of a shallow "idiot". However, upon reading the "graveyard scene" from the pilot, she was so impressed that when she was offered the role, she immediately accepted it.The executives at Neutrogena decided to make her the cover girl for their new worldwide ad campaign; in this regard Kreuk followed in the footsteps of fellow teen stars Jennifer Love Hewitt and Mandy Moore.

In 2003, Kristin Kreuk wrapped up her role on Edgemont. She was also tapped for her first feature film role in the summer of 2003; she made a cameo appearance in the movie Eurotrip, starring Scott Mechlowicz and Michelle Trachtenberg. The film, shot in Prague, Czech Republic, also featured cameos by Matt Damon and Lucy Lawless. It debuted in theatres on February 20, 2004.

In the summer of 2004, Kristin Kreuk joined the cast of the Sci Fi Channel miniseries Legend of Earthsea, starring Shawn Ashmore and Danny Glover and based on the novels by Ursula K. Le Guin. Her character, Tenar, is the pupil of High Priestess Thar of the Tombs of Atuan (played by Isabella Rossellini) and also the love interest of Ashmore's character. The two-part miniseries, filmed in Vancouver, was directed by Rob Lieberman and co-produced by Lawrence Bender of Pulp Fiction fame. It aired on December 13, 2004.

In early 2005, Kristin Kreuk signed on to the cast of the independent feature film Partition, set to begin shooting in Vancouver and Chandigarh, India in May of that year. She will be playing the role of Naseem, a vulnerable 17-year-old girl whose world is shattered by the trauma of the Partition of India in 1947, but falls in love with ex-British Indian Army officer Gian Singh (played by Jimi Mistry). Neve Campbell also stars in the film, which is directed by Vic Sarin and is a co-production between Canada, South Africa, and the United Kingdom.

Sabrina Salerno (born 15 March 1968 in Genoa, Italy as Norma Sabrina Salerno) is an Italian singer, showgirl, model, actress and record producer.

After winning a beauty contest in her native region, Liguria, she started modeling, and in 1985 made her TV debut in the prime time show Premiatissima on Canale 5. That same year, her debut single was released: Sexy girl, produced by Claudio Cecchetto, the single became a Top20 hit in her native Italy.

In 1988 Sabrina received "The Best European Singer" award, and enjoyed another European-wide summer hit with the single "All Of Me (Boy Oh Boy)" (produced by Stock, Aitken & Waterman). Later in that year, her second album, Super Sabrina, was released, and she established herself as a true European sex symbol thanks to the raunchy videos that accompanied hits such as My Chico and Like A Yo Yo (produced by Giorgio Moroder). The latter became the TV theme of Odiens, a very popular Italian Saturday prime time TV show, in which Sabrina also starred.

In 1999 she released a new album, Flower's broken, in Italy and Spain but, although an early curiosity was evoked by the new single - I love you - video, both album and single were unsuccessful. She was a guest on the UK show Eurotrash where she performed her new single "I love you".

2001 saw Sabrina's comeback to theatre with the musical Emozioni that received very good reviews from critics. The following year she hosted another TV show on Italia 1 called Matricole & Meteore, in which she travelled the world in order to uncover the current situations of former star such as Shannen Doherty, Al Corley, Gary Coleman, Jimmy Sommerville, Charlene Tilton and others.

In 2005 she has starred in the independent film Colori that was premiered at the Salerno´s Independent Cinema Festival, where she won the The Critics' Choice Awards as best actress. Sabrina also took part in ITV's Hit Me Baby One More Time where she sung live "Boys (Summertime love)" and Sugababes' "Hole in the head". In November she performed Boys and All Of Me on Russian concert "Дискотека 80-х".

In 2006 she released (only through her official web site) a new song called I Feel Love (Good Sensation).
